Karuna System of Reiki

May your compassionate actions, as pure as gold, come back to you a thousand fold.

The Meaning of Karuna

• Karuna is a Sanskrit word that is used in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Zen.
• It is translated as any action that is taken to diminish the suffering of others.
• It may literally be translated as “compassionate action.”
• It is a logical extension of the idea of Oneness.
• Karuna must be accompanied by parjna (wisdom) in order to have the right effect.
• As you develop Karuna in yourself, not only are you helping others but you also become more receptive to the Karuna that is being sent by all enlightened beings, thus your own healing is quickened.
• Karuna opens you to work more closely with all enlightened beings, both those who are physically present and those who are present in spirit.

Origin of the Karuna System of Reiki

• Developed by William L. Rand
• The symbols were channeled by several other Reiki masters including Marcy Miller, Kellie-Ray Marine, Pat Courtney, Catherine Mills Bellamont, and Marla Abraham.
• Rand used the symbols and found them to have value, but felt that they had greater potential than had previously been accessed.
• Meditation on them led him to develop the attunement process and to call the new system Karuna Reiki.
• Some of the symbols used in Karuna Reiki are used in other systems, but they do not have the same effectiveness or healing energies as in the Karuna system.
• Karuna Reiki energy is different than Usui Reiki, and most find Karuna to be more powerful.
• The energy of Karuna has a more definite feeling to it than Usui and works on all the energy bodies at the same time.
• Students report feeling that the energy surrounds them and the client as well as flowing through them.
• Karuna also has a grounding effect.
• Karuna practitioners often report experiences with their guides, angels, and higher self and feel the healing presence of other enlightened beings.

Using and Teaching Karuna Reiki

• The Karuna symbols can be used just like the other Reiki symbols when giving Reiki treatments.
• The entire system can be taught in one 3 day weekend as long as your students are already Reiki Masters
• Can also be divided into four levels, 2 practitioner and 2 master levels.
• Normally Karuna I and II practitioner levels are only taught to those who have recieved Usui 3a.
• Normally the Karuna Master training is only taught to those who are already Usui Reiki Masters.
• In Karuna I practitioner level, teach the first four symbols from Karuna I, give the practitioner attunement for them and allow time to practice their use. When giving the attunement, in the prayer at the beginning, state that this will be a Karuna I practitioner attunement. Then place only the four treatment symbols from Karuna I into the hands. Do not place the master symbols into the hands. Have the students practice using the Karuna I symbols.
• In Karuna II practitioner level, do exactly the same with the Karuna II treatment symbols.
• In the Master level attunements you place the master symbols into the hands as well as the treatment symbols. Then you demonstrate the attunement method and have students practice doing the attunements until they have mastered them.

Karuna and Spiritual Guidance

• Working consistently with Karuna Reiki energy strengthens our awareness and connection to the purest spiritual guidance.
• May find yourself more open to certain guiding energies that are related to your personal spiritual belief systems.
• Karuna can teach one to be more open to universal Oneness by enhancing our abilities to receive guidance and by introducing us to other great spiritual masters unknown to us in our present lifetime.
• Work with Karuna Reiki with an open heart and mind. The more we learn to completely trust the Karuna Reiki energy, the more these beautiful beings and energies can communicate with us clearly.

Empowering the Hands

1. Place Om in the hands, repeat the name three times silently, and either clap the hands together or pat the palms three times.
2. Repeat with Tibetan Dai Ko Mio.
3. Repeat with Tibetan Fire Serpent.

Contracting the Hui Yin

• A muscular contraction of the Hui Yin point is a necessary part of giving Reiki attunements.
• The Hui Yin point is between the anus and the genitals.
• When giving attunements, a special type of high frequency Ki enters your system and passes through the Hui Yin point as part of the process.
• This point must be gently contracted for the entire time you are giving the attunements to prevent Ki from escaping from this point.
• Because of this it is important to practice holding this point to build up your coordination and muscular strength in this area.
• Practice contracting the muscles in this area twenty times in a row, and then holding them as long as you can. Also practice contracting these muscles continuously as you go about your day.

The Violet Breath

1. Contract the Hui Yin point and place your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
2. Draw in a breath. Visualize it as white light coming down through your crown chakra and flowing through your tongue, down the front of your body, through the Hui Yin point, and up the spine to the center of your head. Visualize the light as a mist filling your head.
3. Visualize the mist starting to rotate clockwise (when looking at the head from behind). As it rotates, visualize it turning first to blue, then to violet.
4. When the mist turns violet, picture the Tibetan Master Symbol held in the violet mist, but not rotating.
5. Breathe the symbol and mist out of your mouth and into the student’s crown chakra. The tongue remains at the top of the mouth and you blow around the tongue.
6. Guide the symbol down to the base of the skull in three steps, starting with the crown, then the center of the head, and ending at the base of the skull, using your dominant hand and silently chanting Dai Ko Mio once at each of the three points.

The Karuna Reiki Symbols

Zonar:

• Pronounced “zoe nar”.
• Zonar is said to mean infinity or eternity.
• Draw a Z, then come up and draw the infinity symbol three times.
• Works well with past lives and karmic issues.
• Used for dimensional access.
• It is also to help deal with or formulate any issues which are not clearly defined.
• Allows us to open ourselves to the awareness of these issues and our own humanity.
• Our cells can carry the memory of trauma, or even ideas that we brought with us from other lives.
• Like the Usui distance symbol, it can be used to work through and release karma and pain from the past on a cellular level.
• Works well with child abuse.
• Channeled by Marcy Miller and said to have been given to Marcy by Sai Baba during a meditation.

Halu:

• Pronounced “hay-lou”.
• Channeled by Kathleen Milner and Marcy Miller and was given purportedly by Sai Baba during a meditation.
• Halu is said to mean love, truth, beauty, and harmony.
• Amplification of Zonar, the Z is transformed to two pyramids and a third is added.
• More powerful than Zonar and works in higher dimensions and on deeper levels.
• Restores balance and brings about deep healing.
• Thought to work at causal and karmic levels.
• Used to break up negative patterns in the unconscious mind which we use to insulate ourselves from the truth, similar to Sei Hei Ki.
• Shatters delusion and denial.
• Can clear and open a channel to higher consciousness.
• Works well to dispel psychic and psychological attack.
• Works well with sexual and physical abuse issues.

Harth:

• Pronounced as spelled.
• Channeled by Kathleen Milner and Marcy Miller.
• Love, Truth, Beauty, Harmony, Balance.
• Harth is a symbol for the compassionate heart from which love and healing flow.
• Used to heal the heart and issues of the heart.
• Helps one develop Karuna (compassionate action.)
• Helpful in healing relationships.
• Also restores love of life and love for the things we do.
• Good for addictions of all kinds.

Rama:

• Pronounced “ra ma”.
• Channeled by Kellie-ray Marine
• Means abiding joy.
• Used for grounding to the six directions (North, South, East, West, Above and Below) and connecting to the Earth.
• Opens the lower chakras, connects them, and balances them to the earth.
• Harmonizes the upper chakras with the lower and clears lower chakra energies.
• Can help to get a person out of lower chakra issues (survival, lack, over indulgence in or lack of desire for sex, power struggles, etc.)
• Can be used to clear crystals and clear a room of negative energies.
• Empowers material goals and helps to manifest them.
• Creates/stimulates steadfastness and determination.
• If you initiate the feet with Rama and the power symbol, it will open the feet chakras and connect with the earth energy bringing balance and increasing the amount of Ki energy channeled.

Gnosa:

• Pronounced “know sa”.
• Channeled by Maria Abraham.
• Also called “Planetary Healing and Enlightenment by Maria and Kathleen.
• The word “Gnosa” is derived from the Greek “Gnosis”.
• Links you more strongly with the Higher Self.
• Brings higher consciousness into the physical body, increases awareness.

Kriya:

• Pronounced “kree yah”.
• Channeled by Pat Miller.
• Draw this symbol with both hands at the same time.
• It is a Doubled Cho-Ku-Rei used for manifestation and healing the human race.
• Means action and creation.
• Brings in and/or releases energy creating balance.
• Raises awareness, transforms thoughts into action and manifestation.

Iava (ee-ah-vah):

• Pronounced “ee-ah-vah”.
• Channeled by Catherine Mills.
• Balances the four elements.
• When drawing the four small loops, say “Earth” with the first, “Water” with the second, “Wind” or “Air” with the third, and “Fire” with the fourth.
• Helps pierce the veil of illusion that is our conditioned thoughts and beliefs.
• Lets us see things as they are, rather than as our conditioned thoughts and beliefs would lead us to believe.
• Recreates your own Reality as fully your own and not as part of someone else’s projection.
• Heals and heightens reality awareness.
• Frees us to respond to another in the moment, rather than reacting from past conditioning.
• Allows you to take action on your own plans.
• Can be used to heal the earth (situations, places, disasters, disease, etc.)

Shanti:

• Pronounced “shawn-tee”.
• Channeled by Pat Courtney.
• Means peace.
• Assists in manifesting the best possible results.
• Releases fears and nightmares and soothes the aura, creating a feeling of peace.
• Heals the past, creates harmony in the present, and releases attachments to both the past and the future.
• Creates intigration. (Some say this occurs on seven dimensions.)

Om:

• Pronounced “Ah uu mm”.
• A sanskrit symbol used in many eastern spiritual practices.
• The sacred sound of the universe, the primal sound, chanted to control natural manifestations.
• Symbolizes the oneness that we are and connects us to it.
• Represents the three manifestations of all life: creation, preservation, and destruction.
• Purifies, protects, seals, and stabilizes the aura.
• Brings in light, purifies, protects, and connects with the High Self and the divine.
• Opens the crown and when drawn above one’s head opens the pathways to the Divine and higher consciousness.

Dai-Ko-Myo:

• Also known as Dumo or the Tibetan Master Symbol.
• Used to begin attunements, used with the violet breath, and used during treatments.
• When used with the Karuna Reiki energy, flows through the recipient connecting them to mother earth at the root chakra. Thus, aids in being centered and grounded in one’s spiritual purpose.
• Pulls negative energy and disease out of a body, room, or situation and releases it.
• thought to heal the soul, bringing spiritual growth.
• Can be used on crystals to self-clear.
• Represents the swirling, fiery heat of the Kundalini.
• Dumo or Dumo Fire is the heat which ascends over the spine as a result of Kundalini Awakening.
• The unification of mind and body produce the emanation of heat. Heat is the lowest range of vibration, radiating out to produce form (Body).
• Dumo is the igniter of the Sacred Flame or Kundalini Fire.
• Unifies the body and mind and works with the fire in the base chakra.

Fire Serpent:

• Represents the Sleeping Serpent coiling at the base of the spine/base of the world tree.
• Connects and opens all chakras.
• Opens the central channel, allowing the flow of Kundalini fire, or the Dumo.
• Can be used in healing or meditation for more balance and receptivity.

Toning

• Your voice can be empowered by Karuna Reiki and used during a treatment. It is especially useful in releasing blocks and negative energy.
• Scan the person to locate the area of concern. You can also use the technique used in psychic surgery, which is taught in the ART class, to help the person locate the problem, asking them to find the location, shape, color, sound, weight, etc.
• Once the area is located, empower your hands.
• Draw the Om symbol on your throat, and place your hands on it asking Karuna Reiki to empower your vocal cords and voice. Do Karuna Reiki for a minute or so.
• Say a prayer asking the Karuna guides and other spiritual beings to work with you.
• With your hands between several inches and several feet from the client, begin beaming Karuna Reiki to the area. (The Usui distance symbol can also be drawn over the area before starting.)
• Experiment in your mind with the different tones at different frequencies to find the one that feels like the right frequency, or you may simply intuit which is right. Experiment with any of the symbol names like Om, Ra-Ma, Halu, Iava, Dai-Ko-Mio, etc.
• Take a deep breath and begin toning out loud with a long continuous tone.
• Focus your attention and Karuna Reiki energy on the area of concern and intend that the block be broken up and released.
• Use your voice and hands at the same time until the block is gone.

Chanting

• Toning or chanting during a Karuna treatment creates profound shifts in the vibrational frequency of the energy.
• Can be done aloud or telepathically for similar effects.
• With hands on the sides of the head, chant Om seven times, pause and allow the energy to flow. This intensifies the energy flow through the crown and higher chakras, while creating a protective shell around all of the energy bodies which retains the healing energies and lets them penetrate more deeply. Then give a normal Karuna treatment as guided. Then repeat the above technique, replacing Om with Rama. This assists in releasing negative energies and balances the chakras. Next chant Om, Harth, Om three times, then Om, Shanti, Shanti, Om three times. This completes the releasing process, fills the aura with an energy of compassion for self and others, and seals the session in a glow of unconditional love and peace.
• Om, Om, Om, Kriya, Kriya, Kriya, Om, Om, Om sends a powerful stream of high frequency Karuna energy down through the crown, all the way through the energy system, and out the feet. Cleans blockages, anchors to the earth and to one’s spiritual purpose.
• With hands on the area of pain or tension, chant Om Shanti Shanti Om three times. Relieves pains, muscular tension, or muscle spasms.
• With thumbs on back of neck, chant Iava three times. Fills the crown first with a velvety black light, and the sensation of a crown being placed on the head, then shifts to a deep, brilliant indigo blue light which then flows through the entire body. Promotes visual clarity, increases the frequency of light around recipient and practitioner, assists in staying focused on one’s highest purpose, and to fully experience and remain in the moment.
• These are just a few examples of using chanting and different symbol combinations to generate more effective healing results, more are certainly possible and research is encouraged.

Preparation Before Giving the Attunements.

1. Demonstrate the receptive mudra hand position to the students and explain about moving the hands. Explain how the hands go into prayer position at third eye and back into receptive mudra in front of the heart.
2. Lead the students in a short meditation to ground them to the earth and open them to the universe. Then have them close their eyes and place their hands in the receptive mudra.
3. Empower your hands.
4. Draw a large Cho-Ku-Rei down the front of your body.
5. Draw a Cho-Ku-Rei symbol on each chakra, starting with the root chakra, and say its name to yourself three times per chakra.
6. Draw the Om in the center of the room, and a Cho-Ku-Rei in all 6 directions.
7. Say a prayer asking for help from your highest Karuna guides, the Bodhisattvas, the Ascended masters, the angels and archangels, or other spiritual beings you would like to work with.
8. Clearly indicate in your prayer what level attunement this will be.
9. Optionally, choose one enlightened being you would like to work with and invite them to enter your being and do the attunement through you.
10. Draw all of the symbols that you will be using in the attunement into the center of the room to raise the vibration.

Karuna Attunement Process

1. Begin behind the student, and steady the aura by holding the non-dominant hand in the aura about six inches from the body.
2. Draw the Tibetan Fire Serpent down the back.
3. Draw three Usui Power Symbols (Cho-Ku-Rei) at the base of the spine.
4. Redraw the Fire Serpent backwards up the spine to the top of the head.
5. Use violet breath to blow in the Tibetan Master Symbol and direct it to the base of the skull.
6. Draw the Usui Master Symbol over the head and direct it to the base of the skull.
7. Do the same with the Om symbol.
8. Move to the front and open the student’s hands.
9. Draw the four treatment symbols for the level of Karuna Reiki you are attuning the student to. If attuning a master/Teacher first draw Tibetan Master, then Fire Serpent, then Om, and then the treatment symbols for that level.
   Treatment symbols for Karuna I are Zonar, Halu, Harth, and Rama.
   Treatment symbols for Karuna II are Gnosa, Kriya, Iava, and Shanti.
10. Close the students hands into prayer position and move the hands so the thumbs touch the third eye. Hold the hands with your non-dominant hand and draw each symbol in the same order as above over the fingers. After drawing the symbols, motion the energy into the fingertips as you say the name to yourself three times, then tap the fingers three times.
11. Move the hands back to the heart chakra and have the students place their fingers back into the receptive mudra.
12. Over the crown, raw the Om symbol and the four treatment symbols of the level the student is being attuned to. If doing a Master level attunement, after drawing each symbol say its name three times and motion it into the crown chakra.
13. Move to the back. As you look into the crown chakra, say a positive affirmation to yourself, intending it to go into the heart chakra of the student.
14. Blow lightly into the crown, imagining it going down to the heart while focusing on Divine Love and compassionate action. Use an affirmation such as “You are a powerful and successful Karuna Reiki I practitioner filled with love and compassionate action.”
15. Seal the attunement by placing both thumbs at the base of the skull and visualizing the Cho-Ku-Rei there. Say to yourself “I completely seal this attunement process with compassionate action.”
16. Place both hands on the students shoulders and meditate on how both of you are blessed for having taken part in this experience.
17. Move in front of the student and release the Hui Yin and the tongue with a breath out as a final blessing. A prayer or blessing can also be said at this time.
18. Ask the student to place their hands on their legs or their heart center and contemplate the meaning of Karuna and the new symbols.
