Over and over again I see people making “advanced” shields that still have the same fundamental flaw.  I highly suggest that anyone interested in truly advanced shielding take a look at this short story by Isaac Asimov.  It very nicely highlights that flaw.

Interesting question. Cel and I discussed this a little when we were out tonight. He said he tended to construct his shields with this in mind, that they extended backwards and forwards in time. But then both of us were like, well, we never really thought about it as such, because the method was a kind of “sovereignty”-NO… no, you cannot, whatever or whenever.

Me, I rarely consciously erect shields; things just seem not to touch me unless extreme. And then the “NO” field seems to suffice… I dunno. I guess the point is taken from the story, but I wonder what you are hoping people get from it? Is it that one should project shields into the past and future, not neglect that dimension? OTOH, what about the “eternal now”… isn’t “now” when one perceives an attack? Or then again, what about 5th, 6th, etc dimensions… ones we have little or no way of perceiving let alone setting up constructs in in this reality with this equipment. What about them?

*nods* Good method, IMO.  Though now I have Labyrinth stuck in my head:  “Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great… You have no power over me.”

Me, I rarely consciously erect shields; things just seem not to touch me unless extreme. And then the “NO” field seems to suffice… I dunno. Well, I wasn’t being quite as specific as the story.  In that story he chose the dimension of time to move in, but he could just have easily chosen to move in one of the other dimensions beyond the three physical ones.  I’d like people to just learn the lesson of not thinking strictly three-dimensionally.

OTOH, what about the “eternal now”… isn’t “now” when one perceives an attack?

Perceives, yes.  But by the time you perceive the attack, I might already be attacking from inside your shields.

Or then again, what about 5th, 6th, etc dimensions… ones we have little or no way of perceiving let alone setting up constructs in in this reality with this equipment. What about them?

I think we need to take them into account too.  Visualizing them as being sealed off, as best as we can.  I think even just having the intent that the shield cover additional dimensions may help.  But I see people set up these complex layered shields… a regular shield, an absorbing shield, a mirror shield, a shield that converts attacks to healing energy, a shield that launches preset attacks when it’s attacked, a shield of elemental fire, etc etc etc… these are considered “advanced” shields, but it’s child’s play to simply step around them if you don’t limit yourself to three-dimensional thinking.
