Continuing the surge of new features for the site, I’m pleased to introduce our dedicated IRC channel, #dreamhart on Mibbit.net. There’s a web-based IRC client available on the site here, and of course you can connect to it using any IRC client. I’ve also added a widget to the site, on the top of the right hand sidebar, which lets you know how many people are currently in the IRC channel. The count is not live, but updates once every five minutes so should provide a reasonable estimate of how active the channel is. I’m going to try to be in it as much as possible. If people want, I may even work towards setting a dedicated time (perhaps once a week?) that can be set aside for chatting.

Edit: We’ve had to move from Dalnet to Mibbit.net due to restrictions Dalnet places on the number of users who can connect through Mibbit clients. Anyone using the webclient should notice no real changes, anyone using their own IRC client should now direct themselves to irc.mibbit.net.

Edit: So, the widget for counting how many people were on the channel in IRC turned out to be unreliable. So far, I haven’t found a direct replacement for it, the best I can do at the moment is a count of how many people are using the mibbit widget to chat in the channel, rather than how many users are in the channel itself. I’m not sure that’s really useful, so my recommendation at the moment is if you care about how many people there are to chat with, sign onto the channel and check.

Very nice! And thanks a lot for making a web-based one for clueless people like me. winkWhen I saw “IRC” in the title, I already thought “Oh no, I'll never find my way in.”

*grins* Naw, I made sure people could connect easily.  I chose to use IRC for a few reasons: a) it was the only chat plugin I could find that worked via iPhone/iPad, b) If people don't like the interface, they can use their own clients (and avoid the ads that way), c) it has built-in tools for banning people if they become a problem, d) it supports private messaging other users, e) it supports setting the channel to moderated (meaning I decide who can talk) which is useful if we ever have live discussions attended by a large group and are trying to keep things somewhat on-topic, f) it supports the creation of additional private, password-protected channels if people want to chat with a few friends on the side.  A lot of that is advanced stuff, though… just get used to using the channel through the web-client for now. wink

Hey Jarin, I don't know if it's the light-coloured style or something else, but your post here gets cut off at the right side, like the right margin is missing and words aren't complete. Thought you might want to know.

But yes, good thinking! (As far as I can follow you XD)

It wasn't the style, but it was a bug introduced when making the changes to the forums that allow them to be part of the site-wide style switcher.  Thanks for letting me know, it should be fixed now. 🙂

Ok, so, I may have made a mistake creating #dreamhart on Dalnet.  While it's an old server with a good reputation, apparently it does not play well with the Mibbit client.  Only 25 connections by mibbit clients are allowed per server on Dalnet.  That puts us in the position of competing for a finite amount of slots with other websites using the Mibbit client to connect to Dalnet.  I'm thinking I may have to drop the channel registration there, and find a different server that plays better with Mibbit.  No decisions made as to what server that will be yet, though mibbit has a nice list to choose from including irc.mibbit.net
