When people in Western societies talk about doing spiritwork, you usually hear about certain sets of spirits that are being worked with: the dead, animals (including totemic representatives of an entire species), gods, angels, wilderness-based fae, and elementals.  Possibly one or two others depending on the exact system being worked with.  Most rarely get into working with the spirits of plants, much less with stranger things.  What about you?  What spirits do you work with that might be considered outside the norm?

Ordinary people.  People from other dimensions, including other “Earth-worlds”.  Creatures which may or may not fit in that category.

Same as Tenshi said though we're a lot more solitary and locked-off, so the cases are relatively rare and also usually don't have anything to do with work and more with socialising and/or regular problem-solving between people. And its exclusively people we know.

Then, two of our guys interact with cities, and one with plants. But again, 'work' isn't the right term really. With the city-guys it used to be that in a past life, but here it's just a communicative channel that they still have available that the rest of us don't, so they interact when they're somewhere where that line is open. That's all.

And the one with the plants doesn't have any past lives, he's from here, so that's not an issue at all; he's just a young idealistic fluffball that likes plants and can talk to them. That somehow e.g. teas he gets from leaves of his plants seem more effective is a nice side effect, but he'd be horrified at any kind of intrumentalization of that. (I wonder if that's not why it works. After all even science has confirmed that they're in their own way smart creatures that can read intentions.)

I understand “people from other dimensions”.  Not sure about the other two.  How do you work with the spirits of ordinary people?  I assume you mean living people, since one of the usual categories I mentioned was the dead…   And I'm not quite sure what you mean by “creatures” which may or may not be from other dimensions, as distinct from people… do you mean nonsentient beings from other worlds?

The stuff you were telling me about them attuning to cities is what actually got me thinking about this topic. smile

I do some work with Genii Loci (Spirits of Place) which can include city spirits, though it can also be much more localized… the spirit of a particular neighborhood, for instance.  It's actually somewhat strange that working with such spirits is considered out of the ordinary these days; it used to be one of the hallmarks of older pagan cultures.

Spirits of computers, cars, websites… general technology spirits, I suppose.

Spirits of urban fae… fairly different from their wilderness-based counterparts.  The main ones I work with directly are gremlins; with all the technology-related stuff I do, it's a good idea to stay on friendly terms with them, otherwise it's death by a thousand papercuts as everything electronic or mechanical around you seems to fall apart all at once.  Now that I'm living in a more urban area, I'm trying to expand that work and see what other types are out there.  Haven't had the chance to do much of that lately, it's been too hot for much walking around.  I suspect that if I really want to get deeply into such contact, I may need to pursue urban exploration… find the places, even in the heart of the city, where people don't go.  The off-limits, the abandoned, the forgotten, the inaccessible.

That's everything I can think of at the moment.

I don't know if working with trees counts as communicating with “unusual spirits” per say, but since I live in a forest

area I have plenty of opportunity to work with plant spirits, though I

admit I don't do anything regularly. The trees by my school were very

responsive to me; I leaned up against one once and literally felt as if

someone had grabbed me, and another time I peeled some lowlife's gum off

their trunks and an unprecedented gust of wind caused their branches to

rustle loudly as I extended my hand. I feel the influence of “place

spirits” on a gut level, but doubt that I could communicate w/ them.

Methinks I might be a young idealistic fluffball!

Heh that sounds nice!

And you know those studies they've done where they found that plants send out chemical responses based on what was the intention of a human approaching them (eg. water them or cut them etc)? And they do the chemical equivalent of screaming, too. So that makes me think the 'idealistic fluffball' category of people might be the best for that. wink

(We poke fun at our headmate sometimes but it's all good-natured, and his results speak for themselves.)
