The Elfinkind Digest
Last updated 20 January 2018. Yes, it's old-school. Very old-school.

What was it?

The Elfinkind Digest was a mailing list format discussion group for elves and interested others. The term "otherkind" and "otherkin" originated from this discussion list, when we advertised for elves and got all sorts of other sorts too. We needed a name for the other kinds of people who showed up, and, well, there you go.

What, you serious?

Yes, we're serious. The Elfinkind Digest was a mailing list for, about and by elves and interested others. The majority of the list population were elves and elfintypes, with a significant minority population of dragons and dracoforms. This was never a list for or about role-playing or role-playing games; we're elves. Deal with it, or not. It's up to you.

This page is a bit sad, though, isn't it?

Ah, yeah. Absolutely. We maintained just enough web presense to let people find the list if they looked for it, and that's the only reason we had this page at all. You want social media, to to Tumblr.

A brief history and statement of purpose

The list was founded in 1990 because that's when I got EDUNET access and discovered things like Usenet newsgroups. The first notices about the list's existence went out to the old alt.pagan newsgroup, and to a few others I thought might have some interest. As list membership expanded to the UK and Europe, we established a United Kingdom Mail Relay, in order to make delivery more reliable - a real issue in the early 1990s. Once the net started working most of the time, the relay was shut down, and mail sent directly.

The membership count varied over time, but generally remained under 100; historically, we did not actively seek new members, simply trying to be a presense for those who have discovered themselves, and need someone else to talk with about it.

For many years, the list was highly active, with heavy traffic and once to twice-daily digests going out. The last few years of technical existence, there were only five or so issues a year. In total, there were 2849 digests send out, containing anywhere from one to dozens of messages, between 1990 and 2018. As mailing list runs go, that's pretty good.
